Korea 2018: Yeosu

So for Christmas last year I went to visit my family in Korea. If you have to ask which Korea... well I honestly don't know what advice to give you other than to do some research and apply common sense.

Anyways, while I was visiting, we took a short trip down south to the coastal city of Yeosu. I hadn't done much painting on beforehand while in the country, so I knew I wanted to Make Art here. Indeed, there was a little island with fun trees and very cool caves and rocks along the shore that provided plenty of inspiration.

Cue the photos!

Since it was a) cold and b) I didn't want to lose track of the fam, the paintings turned out a little more rushed and "impressionistic" than I had originally wanted. The colors are also more muddied and dull, primarily because I was painting very wet, and with a larger brush, so wayy more water on the paper.

Still, even though the end result wasn't quite as tight as I'd like (lots of rhyming there) I still enjoyed the... mood? Tonality? Overall vibe that I achieved, as I thought it captured how I felt about the environment there. Beautiful, yet somehow morose, and overcast. These are also studies, so if you're not buying my admittedly last-minute artist's statement, then at the very least it was good practice, which is never a bad thing!

There was honestly a lot of inspiration here, but if I stopped to paint everything cool, I'd be there all day. But I still took photos!

We did some more sight-seeing in the city, including some fun Admiral Yi bits (might recognize him if you've played Civ and maybe some other empire conquest games.) I didn't make much art outside of this little island, but I did procure some very fancy brush pens that I took out for a spin on the train ride home.

Thanks for reading! I wrote this earlier this year and am happy to see it finally finished, just in time for me to get back from my second Korea trip lolol. Better late than never!
